Twitch Emote Resizer for PNG and Animated GIF Emotes

Prepare a whole set of chat reactions: keep transparent edges, resize animated GIFs, and check each download against the selected upload mode.

Up to 20 MB per image. Still inputs: up to 8192 pixels per side and 40 megapixels total. GIF inputs: up to 500 frames and 4096 × 4096 pixels. Images stay on your device. Large animations can take longer.

Badge-size extras use the source format. GIF extras are size variants, not a badge-upload approval check.

How to resize Twitch emotes

  1. Select your artwork. Choose one image or several together. PNG is a useful starting point for illustrated reactions with transparent edges; GIF is the input to use when movement matters. JPG and WebP are accepted as still pictures and exported as PNG. Keep a copy of your original artwork for future edits.
  2. Match your dashboard. Choose manual upload for a set of 112, 56 and 28 pixel files, or auto-resize for one square image. Leave transparent edges selected to keep the complete drawing. Choose center cropping only when the subject sits safely in the middle. Badge dimensions are an optional extra.
  3. Inspect and save. Press Resize, then compare every result on light and dark chat backgrounds. Read the six checks below each preview. Download one file to inspect it separately, or save the complete collection as a ZIP. Extract the archive before choosing images in Twitch; the archive itself is not an emote.

Files are processed one after another so a batch does not need several animation canvases at once. If one source cannot be read, its error appears beside its name and the remaining images can still finish. Changing an export setting clears the previous results; press Resize again to generate the new set.

Twitch emote size and file rules

The following limits come from the Twitch emote guidelines (checked October 2026). Twitch also asks for a fully transparent background, so the checklist fails any result without transparent pixels, such as a JPG or a photo with its backdrop still in place; this tool cannot remove a background for you. A square means equal pixel width and height, including transparent padding. The byte limit applies separately to each image, not to the ZIP or to the combined set.

Artwork and modeDimensionsFormatMaximum per fileFrames
Static, auto-resizeSquare, 112–4096 pxPNG1 MB1
Static, manual112 × 112, 56 × 56, 28 × 28PNG1 MB1
Animated, auto-resizeSquare; this tool exports 112–512 pxGIF1 MBUp to 60
Animated, manual112 × 112, 56 × 56, 28 × 28GIF512 KBUp to 60

For conservative byte checks, this tool uses 512,000 bytes and 1,000,000 bytes. Auto-resize keeps a square source at its original dimensions within the supported range. Smaller pictures are enlarged to 112 pixels; larger still images are reduced to 4096. Animated auto-resize exports are capped at 512 pixels to keep browser processing manageable. Enlarging a tiny drawing cannot recover detail that was never present.

Animated GIF emotes: frames and file size

An animation can have the right pixel dimensions and still contain too many frames. An 80-frame loop therefore needs a timeline change, even if its file is already small. This resizer selects frames at evenly spaced positions, starting with the first image, and adds the skipped delays to the preceding retained frame. The total timeline stays the same, although the motion may become less smooth.

GIF frames can contain only a changed region rather than an entire picture. Before resizing, the tool combines those regions and applies their disposal instructions, including restoring the previous picture when requested. This prevents a moving object from leaving accidental trails simply because its source uses partial frames.

When an export is still too large, the encoder tries palettes of 256, 128, 64 and 32 colors before reducing the frame count further. Fewer colors can flatten a gradient; fewer frames can make a wave or a bounce look stepped. The result tells you which tradeoff was used. In an extreme case only one frame may remain, and that loss of animation is explicitly reported. A file that still misses the limit receives a failed size check.

The first frame also serves as the default thumbnail, so make it a recognizable expression rather than an empty pause. GIF transparency has a hard transparent-or-opaque boundary; soft PNG edges may look different after conversion to an animated palette. Preview against both backgrounds and watch the whole loop, not just its opening pose.

Sub badges and other platforms

Enable the badge option to add 72, 36 and 18 pixel versions to the download set. These are separate exports, clearly named so they are not confused with the three emote sizes. The extra files retain the source category: a still picture produces PNGs and a GIF produces GIFs. The emote checklist is not a complete badge eligibility or badge format check; confirm the requirements of the badge slot before uploading.

7TV and Kick have their own image and animation requirements. A square export may be useful as a starting asset there, but this page evaluates Twitch emotes. Do not treat a green checklist as approval for another platform. For a general still-image byte target, use the image size in KB tool; for a separate small-photo requirement, see compress image to 50 KB.

Tips so the emote reads at 28 px

Design around one expression or silhouette. A broad eyebrow, a clear mouth shape and a strong outer contour survive reduction better than several tiny props. Remove lettering that becomes an unreadable stripe at chat size. View the 28 pixel preview at its natural size before deciding that the larger version looks finished.

Leave a little transparent breathing room around the drawing so a hand, ear or outline does not touch the square edge. Padding preserves existing margins; it does not remove an opaque background from a photograph. Test dark outlines on dark chat and pale highlights on light chat, because a detail that disappears against one background may need a contrasting border in your original artwork.

Keep edits in your source project and export again when the small version needs structural changes. Repeatedly resizing an already tiny download makes edges softer without improving readability. If your next task is a printed image instead of a chat icon, the centimetre image resizer handles that separate measurement workflow.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which sizes do I need for a Twitch emote?

Manual upload uses three square images: 112 × 112, 56 × 56 and 28 × 28 pixels. For static auto-resize, supply one square PNG between 112 × 112 and 4096 × 4096. Choose the mode that matches the upload controls in your dashboard.

Why can Twitch reject an emote that passes these checks?

These checks cover dimensions, shape, frame count, bytes, file type and whether any pixel is transparent. A transparent edge added around an opaque photo passes that last check, but its backdrop still needs removing. They do not review ownership, content policies or account eligibility. Inspect the error in your Twitch dashboard and check that you selected the correct upload mode before changing your artwork.

What happens when my GIF is too large?

The tool first limits the timeline to 60 frames, then tries smaller color palettes. If needed, it keeps fewer frames while carrying their timing forward. Every result reports the retained frame count. If even the smallest attempt exceeds the byte limit, the file is marked Fail instead of being presented as ready.

Are my original images uploaded?

No image upload is involved. Your browser reads the selected files and creates the downloads on your device. The GIF and ZIP processing code loads when needed, but that does not send your artwork to a conversion service.

How does a rectangular picture become square?

Transparent padding keeps the whole picture visible, with empty space above and below or at the sides. Center cropping fills the square and removes the parts outside it. Neither option stretches the artwork. Check the smallest preview before downloading.

Does a static Twitch emote still need to be under 25 KB?

The October 2026 rules referenced here allow a static PNG up to 1 MB. The old 25 KB figure is not the limit used by this tool. Animated manual uploads have a separate 512 KB cap per file. Always compare these limits with the current Twitch upload screen.
