Resize Image in CM
Choose a width, height and DPI for your photo. Save its centimetre size in the file, with a KB limit only when you need one.
or drop it here, or paste with Ctrl+V. JPG, PNG, WebP or HEIC (iPhone).
How to resize an image in cm
- Open a photograph from your device, drag it onto the tool, or paste a copied image.
- Pick a common size or type the width and height in centimetres. The first number is the width. Use Swap width and height if the measurements on your form are in the opposite order.
- Select a DPI button or enter another resolution. The line beneath the controls shows the resulting pixel dimensions.
- For a different aspect ratio, choose Crop to remove outer edges, Fit to leave white margins, or Stretch to change the proportions. Check that the preview includes everything you need.
- Leave No limit selected for a size-only task, or choose a KB maximum or range if there is also a file size rule.
- Save as JPG or PNG to include the DPI, then download the resized picture.
Centimetres, pixels and DPI
Centimetres describe a physical measurement; pixels describe the grid of an image. DPI connects them by giving the number of pixels per inch. For each side, the calculation is pixels = cm ÷ 2.54 × DPI. The answer is rounded to a whole pixel because a picture cannot contain a fraction of a pixel.
A 3.5 × 4.5 cm rectangle therefore needs 276 × 354 pixels at 200 DPI, or 413 × 531 pixels at 300 DPI. Both describe nearly the same physical rectangle, but the second contains more detail. Enlarging a small source cannot recover detail that was never captured.
Pixel dimensions alone do not tell a document editor how large to place a picture. The resolution stored inside the file supplies that information. This tool writes your chosen DPI into JPG and PNG downloads, alongside the resized pixels, so Word and print dialogs can calculate the intended centimetres.
Centimetre to pixel chart
| Size in cm | 72 DPI | 96 DPI | 150 DPI | 200 DPI | 300 DPI |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2.5 × 3.5 cm | 71 × 99 | 94 × 132 | 148 × 207 | 197 × 276 | 295 × 413 |
| 3 × 4 cm | 85 × 113 | 113 × 151 | 177 × 236 | 236 × 315 | 354 × 472 |
| 3.5 × 4.5 cm | 99 × 128 | 132 × 170 | 207 × 266 | 276 × 354 | 413 × 531 |
| 5.08 × 5.08 cm (2 × 2 in) | 144 × 144 | 192 × 192 | 300 × 300 | 400 × 400 | 600 × 600 |
| 6 × 2 cm | 170 × 57 | 227 × 76 | 354 × 118 | 472 × 157 | 709 × 236 |
| 10.16 × 15.24 cm (4 × 6 in) | 288 × 432 | 384 × 576 | 600 × 900 | 800 × 1200 | 1200 × 1800 |
| 21 × 29.7 cm (A4) | 595 × 842 | 794 × 1123 | 1240 × 1754 | 1654 × 2339 | 2480 × 3508 |
These numbers are rounded to the nearest whole pixel, using the same conversion as the tool above.
Which DPI to use
72 and 96 DPI are common screen-related values. When a picture is viewed only on a screen, its DPI tag does not change the visible detail: the pixel dimensions matter. 150 DPI is useful for a draft print. 200 DPI appears in many scanning instructions; IBPS's scanning guidelines ask for at least 200 dpi.
300 DPI is a common choice for photo printing, so this page starts there. If a form or size table specifies a DPI, use that value instead. Choosing a higher number gives a larger pixel grid and usually a heavier file, rather than making every source image sharper.
Printing at the exact size
In the print dialog, select Actual size or 100%. Avoid Fit to page, which scales the picture to the available paper area. The result's Print size line lets you check the saved resolution and physical measurements before sending it to the printer.
Inserting the JPG or PNG into Word uses the file's DPI to set its initial size in centimetres. Dragging a corner afterwards changes that placement size. WebP has no standard DPI field, so choose JPG or PNG for a document or print job where the physical measurement matters.
If the form also has a KB limit
Click a Maximum button or a range button to turn off No limit and reveal the KB inputs. With fixed dimensions, JPG and WebP adjust quality without changing width or height. PNG has no quality slider; if it cannot fit at the requested dimensions, the tool reports that rather than silently resizing it.
For a 50 KB photo, see compress image to 50 KB. A download that falls short of a minimum can be raised with increase image size in KB. For a task concerned only with file weight, open reduce image size in KB.
Frequently Asked Questions
How many pixels is 3.5 × 4.5 cm?
With a resolution of 200 DPI, use 276 × 354 pixels. At 300 DPI, use 413 × 531 pixels. The centimetre dimensions stay the same; the higher resolution gives you more pixels across that area.
Does resizing in cm change the file size?
Usually, because the pixel count and encoding change. No limit uses quality 92 for JPG and WebP, while PNG remains lossless. If you need a particular number of KB, select a maximum or a range and the tool searches for an encoding that fits.
Will the image print at the size I set?
The selected DPI is stored in the downloaded JPG or PNG, so software can read the intended physical dimensions, with a small rounding difference from whole pixels. Select Actual size or 100% when printing. Fit to page can enlarge or shrink it.
What if my photo is a different shape?
Crop fills the rectangle by trimming the outer parts. Fit preserves the full photograph and adds white space where needed. Stretch fills the rectangle by changing its proportions. Compare the preview before saving, especially if the subject is near an edge.
Is my photo uploaded?
No. Your browser reads the image and performs the conversion on your device. There is no photo upload or server copy. The download is created locally, so you do not need an account to resize it.
