Resize Image to 20KB
Prepare your application photo with a 20 KB cap or 10–20 KB range, the requested dimensions and an exact byte count.
or drop it here, or paste with Ctrl+V. JPG, PNG, WebP or HEIC (iPhone).
How to resize an image to 20 KB
- Pick a JPG, PNG, WebP or iPhone HEIC picture from your device.
- The starting cap is 20 KB. For an application asking for 10–20 KB, select that range or enter 10 in Minimum.
- If your form is one of the presets, click it. Otherwise enter pixels or centimetres in Dimensions; leave Original selected when no dimensions are specified.
- Inspect the preview, exact bytes and pixel dimensions before downloading.
Presets for common 20 KB uploads
Any photo selects a 20 KB maximum, Original mode and JPG, without a minimum. It keeps the original pixel dimensions. It shrinks the picture if fitting within 20 KB would need quality below 70, or if the picture is too large for the browser to draw. The message shows the new dimensions.
Driving licence photo (Sarathi) sets 10–20 KB, 420 × 525 pixels and JPG. Sarathi’s guide prefers those pixels and requires that range and format. Setting the lower bound also prevents a tiny file falling below 10 KB.
UP D.El.Ed photo: the guide asks for 3.5 × 4.5 cm and a file up to 20 KB, but does not specify DPI or file format. This preset uses 200 DPI to convert 3.5 × 4.5 cm to 276 × 354 pixels and saves as JPG. The saved JPG also records 200 DPI in the file, so document and print software read it as 3.5 × 4.5 cm.
Each named preset sets only the file size limit and the pixel size listed above, and saves as JPG. Check the photo rules in your own notice separately, for example how recent the photo must be, the background, and whether caps or dark glasses are allowed.
How much fits in 20 KB?
On 8 October 2026, we tested our own generated images, not photos of real people. Each row below uses the same phone-sized 4032 × 3024 test image: a gradient with light noise, saved as a 5 MB JPG.
| Setting | Result |
|---|---|
| Any photo (Original) | 914 × 686 pixels, quality 70, 19,968 bytes (the tool said it had shrunk the picture) |
| Driving licence photo (Sarathi): 420 × 525 | quality 87, 18,379 bytes |
| UP D.El.Ed photo: 276 × 354 | quality 96, 18,978 bytes |
| Keep original exactly | not possible: the smallest it could reach was 74.4 KB, and the tool said so |
A 4000 × 3000 test image filled with noise, one of the hardest kinds to compress, also fit with the Sarathi preset: 420 × 525 pixels, quality 69, 19,780 bytes. A nearly solid-colour 420 × 525 test image was only 3.9 KB at maximum quality; the Sarathi preset padded it to 11,264 bytes, leaving the picture and pixels unchanged.
For small form photos, setting the requested dimensions first can leave room for higher quality within 20 KB; without set dimensions, the tool shrinks the picture when needed and tells you the new size.

Rules can change, and state portals may differ. Follow your own application screen. This table covers only file sizes and dimensions; read the original notice for other conditions.
For a phone photo or scan of a signature, use signature resize to automatically crop empty paper, whiten the background and save at 10–20 KB.
Why do forms ask for 20 KB?
Forms usually ask for small files because they use less storage and are easier to upload on slow connections. A small photo box may not need a large file.
Supported formats
Open JPG, PNG, WebP or HEIC from an iPhone. Save as JPG by default, or choose PNG or WebP. Sarathi asks for JPG, and many Indian application forms do the same. PNG has no adjustable quality; reducing pixels is its way to save space, so JPG is usually a better choice at 20 KB.
Outside Safari, the first HEIC conversion downloads a decoder of about 3 MB. All image processing takes place inside your browser. No picture is uploaded to our server.
Other sizes
For a 20–50 KB photo, compress an image to 50 KB. Below a required minimum? Increase image size in KB. For a different cap, such as 100 KB or 200 KB, reduce image size in KB.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is 20 KB 20,000 or 20,480 bytes?
Downloads stay at or below 20,000 bytes, within 20 KB by either definition. Minimums use 1,024 when the range allows: a 10 KB minimum is then 10,240 bytes. Results show the precise byte total.
Why is my photo smaller in pixels after resizing to 20 KB?
Original mode shrinks when full dimensions would need quality below 70, or when the picture is too large for the browser to draw. The highlighted message names the new dimensions. Enter your form’s dimensions or select its preset.
Can I make a 20 KB photo without losing quality?
In our test with the same generated image, 420 × 525 pixels reached quality 87 and 276 × 354 pixels reached quality 96, both within 20 KB. JPG still loses some detail. Squeezing large dimensions into that budget can cause blur.
My file is only 6 KB but the form needs 10–20 KB. What now?
If it is a Sarathi driving licence photo, click that preset; for any other form, type 10 in Minimum. If maximum quality still produces too few bytes, blank comment data fills the file to just above the minimum, leaving its picture and pixels unchanged. WebP cannot receive this padding here; choose JPG.
Does the preset make my photo acceptable for the form?
It sets only file size, pixel dimensions and format. Compare the actual photo with the instructions on your application. Inspect the portal’s preview after uploading, too.
